standing by at the white house as well as nbc's mike viqueira on capitol hill. some verbal smackdown, basically flipping the lights back on and harry reid taking to the floor to eviscerate speaker boehner. >> the sad part is you often seen the floor opened that way. mitch mcconnell being later today. i'm sure we'll hear something later. to hear it two days after christmas and a matter of days before we go through the fiscal cliff, obviously not encouraging. harry reid says time is running hout. he doesn't know if they could go through the legislative hurdles. if they have the votes around here, they can legislate the sky is green and the grass is blue. that's not an issue. what harry reid is really saying is mitch mcconnell, get on board, don't try to filibuster. of course they're talking about a bill that had raise capital on couples making more than $250,000 a year, and do a few other nuts and bolts that are deemed the bare minimum that the president wants to see done before we hit january 1st. i've got to tell you, though, getting back to the votes, the votes simply aren't there i

overwhelmingly, mike ducacas was beaten pretty soundly. after all those things happened, the democratic party through bill clinton and others like him trying to change it, made the party more acceptable to the american people. republicans have not gotten there yet. it was a party as we saw in the election, a declining -- white share of the vote is the declining share of the electorate. their share is going up, but not enough to compensate. >> right. >> right now the sort of primal scream you hear for spending cuts isn't consummate with the american people. president obama just ran on a program of resisting some of the fundamental ways in which the republicans wanted to change medicare and raise taxes on people over $250,000. he won the election and people from the very red districts elected in the house simply have not adapted to that reality. >> let me go to jonathan chait and the primal scream and the election president obama won, but you wouldn't know this in washington. doesn't it feel sometimes like one side experienced maybe a different election? >> they did. for the house republicans,

about those that were killed. >> fireman mike chiporinni with the police department was deceased at the scene. scardino is in surgery, he's a fireman. and joseph happs is also a volunteer firefighter and a full time firefighter with the rochester fire department was also injured and is being treated at the scene. my lieutenant was a lifetime firefighter, i think he started out as an explorer, 20-year veteran of the police departm t department, lieutenant mik mike chiporinni. i know tomas was a younger individual, worked, again, for public service in the forefront, worked for 911, just by all accounts just a tremendous young man. these people get up in the middle of the night to put out fires they don't expect to be shot and killed. >> absolutely not. they don't expect to be shot at when they're coming to help put out flames and save lives. i want to show a picture to our viewers that we just got in of lieutenant mike chiporinni, one of the two officers that was killed. we don't have it for you. we'll get it to you next hour, for sure. the two that were injured are in the hospita

the shootings in connecticut mike huckabee said it was because we removed god from schools. other people thought that was ridiculous. but there's a, you know, you can look at congress and why can't we get anything done? but the bottom line is we can't get anything done. we can't make big decision anymore. at least it seems that way. and so the debate is not necessarily if we're on track, but who do we get back? how do we fix it? and that's i think where the debate is. >> u know, whenever we get into pessimistic moods i always think of my favorite churchill line that americans always do the right thing after first exhausting all of the other possibilities. and we've been through a rough time. we had 9/11, we had two wars that we got bogged down in and it became very unpopular, then we had the greatest economic crash since the great depression, so yea, we haven't been in a great mood as a country, and i think we do think we need to fix things, and we do confront a global economy that's quite different from where we were 20 or 30 years ago, but i'm actually not a pessimist about this. i feel like w

. thanks to mike who did so much to organize the event. he is an old friend. thank you, mike. i'm delighted to be here today with corbin. -- david corbin. we have two books that talk about robert byrd from different perspectives. my book is basically about the senate and the last great senate as i refer to it. senator byrd was the majority leader during the period of time i wrote about. it gives you an ensemble sense of how the senate works. the book originated in 2008. i had been in the senate in the 1970s and 1980s. by 2008, i decided the senate had become utterly unrecognizable to me. polarized and paralyzed, really quite dysfunctional. i decided to write a book about the senate when it was great, specifically when i was there. recommend his web site. i think mike at "the daily beast" has written about this. i know a lot of people have raised a lot of issues about that. host: david from "the washington post" writes in his column this morning -- what do you think of the sentiment that he writes about? guest: let me say this for the record. i am a big fan of his and his novels. if you ever want to read a great spy novel, i recommend his first novel. he writes in the beginning that this is a work of fiction. but the reason he writes that is because it is well known among people like myself that even though it is a fictional book, it covers a lot of the same bases as the cia but the relationship in the 1970's when they were considered a terrorist organization. he has some of the best sources in the intelligence community in washington. i do not share his optimism about the taliban. at this point, it would be great if there could be an understanding as the united states left and what the taliban's role would be in this new government. that wille necessarily work out at this point. it is a difficult problem, i think,
